I really like the MC's in this book. Bastian and Charlie are both well written and believable, I was completely invested in their story and wanted to see their happy ending. Jessie is also a character who felt real and what she and Bastian had to put up with from their blood family was heartbreaking, but it was wonderful to see how family, real family can be the people who are there for you and not just those that share your blood. Jessie and Charlie and Bastian became the family the they needed to be.

Painting with Fire A Survivors Find Love Novel edition by Lissa Kasey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Bastian Hart and his aunt, Jessie Row, are family outcasts, but they are also survivors of pretty traumatic childhoods. Charlie Fox is a wildfire firefighter that has been working with and been bestfriends with Jessie for 10 years. Charlie and Jessie are family by choice, so of course Charlie is going to go back to her childhood town when her mother passes away and Jessie is attending the funeral because Bastian asked her to. What is intended as a short stay ends up being a bit of a journey for all three characters.
The story is told from Charlie’s point of view.

This book was on my favorites of 2016 list but we had not reviewed it yet. Obviously, I loved the story, since I had it on my favorites list, and the reason for that was the characters, they are just so well written, have so many layers and I felt completely drawn into the story, even when it was going to some dark places. And such a collection of characters – Jessie is asexual, one of the best in her field of work and is usually the trainer of new firefighters; Charlie is half Native American, who lived on a reserve and usually ended up not being white enough or native enough, but he has a huge family who supported him when he came out as gay and they have adopted Jessie as well. Then there is Bastian, who has a career as a doll painter, which has added to why he is at odds with his relatives, but also, neither he nor Jessie will lie about their childhood abuse, which does not go over well with the rest of the relatives. Up until this trip, Charlie did not know the extent of the family secrets and what led to the split for Jessie.

Charlie feels attracted to Bastian when they first meet, but based on what Jessie told him and how skitterish Bastian seems at first, he figures it will be something that just stays in the back of his mind. He does feel drawn to him and wants to at least be friends since he thinks, like Jessie, Bastian likely does not have enough of those. Only thing is, spending time as friends, makes Charlie like Bastian more, and Bastian surprises Charlie by returning the attraction. Their romance is so beautifully written, it is definitely about connecting on emotional and intellectual levels more than physical, although there is cuddling and a few hotter scenes between the two, but they feel very natural to the story. I reread the book for this review and fell in love with these two all over again!

Now, there are mentions of child abuse and child sexual abuse, which readers should be aware of if that bothers you. However, if you like dramatic stories with well-developed characters that balance angst, heart, humor, strength, trust and of course, love, I believe you will enjoy this story. And I am very much looking forward to reading An Arresting Love, the second book in the series, coming out March 1, which is about Graham Church, who plays a key role in this book as well.
I really, really liked this story and the unusual character occupations. Charlie and his best friend Jessie are Wildfire Specialists, spending months at a time around the country fighting fires. Jessie's mother has died, so Charlie does not hesitate to offer his support to attend the funeral. Jessie has been estranged from most of her family for years for difficult and disturbing reasons. She is close to her nephew Bastien, so they are staying with him at his home in the San Juan islands. Bastien is an introvert but he's also an artist who uses his talents to paint collectible specialty dolls. This fascinated me, as I once painted and created realistic baby dolls in a slightly similar fashion. Bastien's dolls are highly detailed, require great skill and he makes a substantial living at the tender age of 22. He has also had trouble and fear in his past and Lissa Kasey handles it here quite deftly and delicately, without excess detail but clearly conveyed.

Charlie is immediately drawn to Bastien and truly appreciates his sensitive and artistic nature. There is a great deal of information about the process of doll creation but it never feels like instruction. It is revealed slowly as Charlie and Bastien converse and Charlie knows that Bastain's art is his passion and shapes his personality. Their relationship grows at a slow pace and a slow burn. Expect minimal steam factor, as the background of the story wouldn't suit it. Jessie is presented as an asexual, aromantic and it was great to see a diverse character presented so well.

The story was well paced and really held my attention and interest. There is firefighting action at a couple of points and some conflict with other characters that also create some danger for Bastien. Very much a worthwhile read, mostly character driven with a nice hurt/comfort theme. It's also complete as a romance with a very happy ending!
This was a lovely, sweet, simple read. The characters are likeable, there's no drama manufactured by the author, just for the sake of drama. And my favorite thing is the presence of Jessie, an Ace Aro character who is accepted and valued as asexual and aromantic, not something that needs to be changed.
I love this book. I could not put it down. The characters were so real and relatable. I felt their pain and happiness. I need more about these wonderful people. I would read this again in a heartbeat.
Bastian is the nephew of Jessie who is Nat friends with Charlie. Charlie and Jessie are firefighters who have come to Bastian's showplace home to support him at the funeral of his grandmother and his abusive family.
All does not go well in this nicely told story of growing love , newly formed friendship and family reunited!
I love this story, I fell in love with Charlie and Bastian and really, the characters of their core group - with Jessie and even Bastian's father and step mother were so well written, I had a hard time putting the book down. The development of the relationship between Bastian and Charlie is so well done, it is a wonderful character driven story with a gorgeous cover and one of my favorites of 2016!
