No one with Jessie's history of childhood trauma could make it through unscathed, and Jessie is no exception. As recounted in Appalachian Justice, Jessie is an adult survivor of horrendous childhood abuse suffered at the hands of her stepfather. At the age of 13, on a stormy night on top of Crutcher Mountain, Jessie was rescued by reclusive mountain woman Billy May Platte.
Now, at the age of 47, Jessie is a success, at least by all outward appearances. But underneath it all, Jessie still struggles to reconcile the broken pieces of her past. Little does she know, Billy May's dying wish may just bring her the peace she so desires.
In honor of Billy May's final request, Jessie has invited an agency that works with children with developmental disabilities to establish a wilderness retreat on top of Crutcher Mountain. Everything has come together beautifully, until a series of strange events threatens to shut down the operation.
Unsure what to expect, Jessie returns to West Virginia in search of answers and finds more than she bargained for. Along the way she falls in love with the residents of the Platte Lodge for Children, none more so than 10-year-old Robby O'Brien, a freckle faced, earnest little boy who was diagnosed at birth with Down Syndrome and who, upon the death of his grandfather, finds himself alone in a scary world.
As Jessie searches for answers, determined to save not only the Lodge but Robby as well, she must open her heart to the truths she discovers and place her trust in a lonely little boy. It's only by doing so that she can save herself.

Return to Crutcher Mountain is the 2nd ebook I have read by this author the 1st being Appalachian Justice that was a great read . When a Kindle friend posted in a post I am in, that Melinda's 2nd book was in the Kindle store I immediately went and purchased this book without even reading the description, that is how much confidence I have in this author's ability to produce another "can't put down story".It was great to see Jessie who is much older in this story then when she was in Appalachian Justice with Billy Mae, a wonderful character and I am thrilled that this 2nd story keep's us readers connected with remembering Billy Mae and reminded me of the clique that "you can't judge a book by it's cover" I must add neither can you judge a person for who they are.
I loved both stories but I have to say that this book didn't have the depth as a few of the character's and the turmoil's and heart and gut wrenching story that Appalachian Justice had. The descriptions of the area, the attitudes and the love and abhorring of some of people. I am not disappointed with Return to Crutcher Mountain at all it just seemed to be a lighter read for me. Saying all that I must add that I will continue reading what ever Melinda writes with out reading the descriptions as she has real talent and can draw readers in from the very beginning to the very end of her stories. Her stories have great meaning's to them which will touch your heart and soul. I loved not knowing how the ending was going to turn out also.
I'd recommend reading Appalachian Justice before reading Return to Crutcher Mountain only because you can see what Jessie's life was like growing up. I loved all the kid's in this story and all the kid's touched my heart and Robby was quite a character. Great story Melinda and you have me hooked as a fan for sure. I hope there is someway you can continue the characters from both books into another story. If not I will continue reading your stories because you have me hooked on your writing :>)
I highly recommend both of Melinda Clayton's books.

Return to Crutcher Mountain Cedar Hollow Series Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Melinda Clayton Catherine Edwards LLC ThomasJacob Publishing Books Reviews
I've read the first two books in this series and I loved them both.Return to crutches mountain was so heartwarming and funny. I found Robby to be so funny and so wise for someone with Downs syndrome. He kind of made this book so charming and funny. I will look for the next book in this series. Loved them both so much.
I couldn't put this book down after reading the first few pages. The author, Melinda Clayton has a wonderful way of keeping the memory of Billy May (one of the main character's in author's first book Appalachian Justice) alive throughout this story. The story was so well written that I could feel Jessie's pain and joys. You were kept guessing who was behind all the "incidents" until the very end. Great writing! Hope to see more books by this author.
At first I thought this book wouldn't be as good as Appalachian Justice, but it was. Seeing Jessie as a modern woman working in Hollywood, with trouble being in relationships was interesting. Several twists in the plot, but I won't spoil it for you. Just read this book!
this is the 2nd book of the series, and it was every bit as good as the first. the author does an amazing job of making the reader feel completely involved beginning to end.
Very good! Have to admit though, I thought it got more interesting the last fifty pages or less. Sure hope some how Jesse and Michael can make it as a couple. Sounds like they should be together, him or the sheriff. The sheriff sounds like a real hunk! So glad that Jesse at least found her Dad. She's someone who needs family real bad. I highly recommend this book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book it kept you wandering what was going to happen next. It starts out that Jessie is abandon by her mother, left with an abusive step father. She is RAPED and beat. She escapes and is raised by an older woman. Jessie returns to her mountain home that been turned into a lodge for children with emotional problems, that when the story get interesting. I encourage you to read it.
While Appalachian Justice was contemporary fiction, Return to Crutcher Mountain is more mystery and suspense. The main character is Jessie who has grown up and managed to have a very successful career producing films. She has been able, with some success, to push her abused past into the back of her mind but it still influences her relationships on a personal level.
For Billie May and Jessie Crutcher Mountain was a `healing place' and as such Jessie has founded a camp for developmentally disabled children allowing the mountain to continue it's magic. When odd things start happening Jessie is determined to find out what is happening. Someone wants her back there, the mystery is who and why. Although it is not necessary to read Appalachian Justice, I think it does enrich this story to know the back ground.
Melinda Clayton has woven a remarkable suspense with fully developed characters that jump off the page. Michael and Robbie were wonderful additions to this story. I loved the fact that Crutcher Mountain is still working its magic and Jessie is still benefitting from it. She is able to learn some things about her past that she was unaware of and this starts her journey to true healing. I really didn't think I would like this story as well as Appalachian Justice, but it is just so different from the first I couldn't help but love it also.
